Fifteen starters return. They wont play the Bruins. Or the Wildcats. The Cardinal come to town on October 26...now that is one heck of a homecoming.
Corvallis – A visit from defending Pac-12 Conference champion Stanford, a Friday night home date with USC and a Reser Stadium showdown with rival Washington highlight a six-game home schedule for the 2013 football season for Oregon State.
The Beavers, coming off a 9-4 campaign and a No. 19 national ranking, open the ’13 slate Sat., Aug. 31 against Football Championship Subdivision power Eastern Washington at home. The University of Hawai’i visits Corvallis the following Saturday on Sept. 7 as OSU opens the year with back-to-back home games for the first time since 2005 after the 2012 schedule was modified due to the postponement of the opener against Nicholls State.
OSU plays a pair of road games starting Sept. 14 with the Pac-12 opener at Utah followed by a Sept. 21 trip to San Diego State to face former OSU defensive coordinator Rocky Long and his Aztecs.
The first ever visit to Corvallis by the Colorado Buffaloes occurs Sept. 28 in the sixth game of the series (two played in Portland) – Colorado and OSU last played in 1988 and it marks the first league game ever between the two teams. The first of two byes is Oct. 5, with the second Nov. 9.
The middle portion of the schedule begins with a pair of road games against Washington State Oct. 12 in Pullman and at California Oct. 19 which ends a stretch of playing four away games in a five-contest span. The Beavers and Arizona Wildcats are the only two teams in the conference to have a schedule that features four road games in a five-game set. The game at WSU is OSU’s first since 2009 as the ’11 game was played in Seattle.
The latter half of the schedule features five games, all against 2012 bowl participants – the only team in the Pac-12 with this challenging of a conclusion. Stanford ventures to Reser Stadium Oct. 28 for Homecoming, followed by a short week as USC visits Fri., Nov. 1.
Following the second bye week, the Beavers play at Arizona State Nov. 16; the latest regular season contest ever for OSU in Tempe. The home finale is Nov. 23 against Washington followed by another short week as the 117th Civil War, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, the NW Ford Dealers, McDonald’s and Wells Fargo, is Fri., Nov. 29 in Eugene.
Due to the schedule rotation in the Pac-12, the Beavers will not play UCLA or Arizona during the 2013 or ’14 seasons. The Beavers and Bruins had played eight consecutive years through 2012 while this will be the first time since 1989 the Wildcats are not on the slate. OSU did not play Colorado or USC in 2011 and ’12.
The Beavers will be one of the more experienced teams in the league entering next season with 15 players who started the Valero Alamo Bowl expected to return to the roster, 302 combined starts returning, and a likely top 25 ranking in the preseason.
