Gary Payton II, aka "The Mitten," the son of former Oregon State great Gary Payton, aka "The Glove," has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Beavers for the 2014-15 season.
Payton II, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard from Las Vegas, Nevada, is currently playing for Salt Lake Community College. This season, Payton II is averaging 11.6 points and 7.6 rebounds for the 6-1 Bruins.
Payton II is known as a lockdown defender and an athletic guard that can get to the rim and also rebound. The Beavers are hoping to regain some of the magic his father brought to the program. The Beavers have not reached the NCAA tournament since the elder Payton led them to three appearances during his career that spanned 1987-1990.
“You don’t want to say one signing is more exciting than another, but given the family connection and the relationship we have with the Paytons, it’s so nice to be able to get another Gary Payton on the roster,” Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said. “Gary Payton II is going to be a terrific player for us. He’s not Gary Sr. and we won’t be asking him to score as many as Gary did, but from a defense standpoint and a sort of helping your team win, he’s going to do a lot for this program.”
Payton II's hall of fame father is the program's career-leader in points (2,172), assists (938) and steals (321). He was a consensus All-American in 1990 and named Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year.
