WATCH: Brawl between Blazers and Warriors
Update: Several Portland-area McDonald's owner-operators will accept the 100-point Sausage Egg McMuffin coupon past its three-day expiration period, a McDonald's source informed CSNNW.com. It is not known exactly how many restaurants are in on this, but I'm being told it's "quite a few."
OAKLAND -- KOi Fusion, the local Korean BBQ-style food cart with multiple locations in the Portland area, has gone mute over the last few days regarding its free Koi Taco giveaway.
The trendy food joint announced last week that they would swap one of their well-liked tacos for a McDonald’s Sausage Egg McMuffin coupon the Portland Trail Blazers distribute to fans when the team reaches 100 points at the Moda Center. Now it appears that's on the verge of changing.
According to a source close to the situation, KOi Fusion will not be promoting its McDonald’s exchange promotion anymore. The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity says after some time to reflect on the idea, owner Bo Kwon realized he had bit off more than he could chew.
When CSNNW.com attempted to reach Kwon by email, he refused to speak on the matter, stating he had “no comment regarding the promotion at this time.”
It’s not certain if KOi Fusion will continue to honor their promotion exchange, but it has been made clear by the source that they’re ceasing to openly publicizing it.
The Portland Trail Blazer fans have yet to warm up to McDonald’s ever since Taco Bell opted not to continue the popular Chalupa 100-point promotion prior to the 2013-14 season.
KOi Fusion saw a golden opportunity to capitalize on the fan’s desire to claim a taco post-game oppose to waiting in the morning to claim a breakfast sandwich. KOi Fusion was urging fans to promptly bring their McDonald’s coupons in and they would in turn hand them out to the homeless since there is a three-day expiration date attached to the voucher.
The Trail Blazers and Kwon had a few conversations last week but I'm told the Trail Blazers never asked or encouraged Kwon to drop his promotion.
It was a good idea on Kwon's part.
