Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard has been selected to be part of USA Basketball’s player pool with the chance to make the roster for the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, a league source informed CSNNW.com.
USA Basketball will make the official announcement tomorrow morning in a teleconference. It is expected that 25-30 names will be on the list.
ESPN has reported that LaMarcus Aldridge is part of that group, too, and we can confirm that. About a month ago, Aldridge reached out to USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo to express his interest in playing for his country, we’re told.
The duo of Aldridge and Lillard has led this Portland team to being amongst one of the league’s greats this season. Both have a legitimate shot at participating in the Olympics two years from now.
Aldridge is averaging a career-high 24.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists this season. Lillard has a career-high in points (21.2) and is dishing out 5.8 assists per game. He's shooting 43 percent from three-point range.
