PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Joey Matthews doubled to left with one out in the 11th Monday to send the No. 6 Oregon State baseball team to a 5-4 win over UC Riverside at Palm Springs Stadium.
Kavin Keyes singled to open the inning and moved to second when Dylan Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jerad Casper was then intentionally walked and Zane Yanzick pinch ran for Keyes at second. Matthews then drilled a pitch from UC Riverside reliever Donovan Gonzales to the warning track in left, enabling Yanzick to come home with the game-winning run.
The win pushed Oregon State to 4-0 for the first time since the 2007 club started the season 7-0. UC Riverside, meanwhile, fell to 1-3.
Max Engelbrekt picked up the win after going 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out one and is 1-0 on the year. Gonzales, meanwhile, is 0-1.
Tyler Painton highlighted Oregon State’s day on the hill. The junior made his OSU debut and worked six scoreless innings.
UC Riverside tied the game in the ninth on a fielder’s choice that netted two runs on the play. Oregon State had taken a 3-2 lead in the third when Michael Conforto singled up the middle. The Beavers then extended the lead to 4-2 when Tyler Smith reached on an infield single in the seventh.
Oregon State started Dylan Davis who worked one inning, allowing two runs and three hits while walking two. He did not figure in the decision.
UC Riverside scored its two first-inning runs off the bat of Phil Holinsworth, who doubled to the right center gap off Davis. It brought in David Andriese and Joe Chavez, who had each reached on two-out singles and who moved up a base when Drake Zarate walked.
The Beavers matched the Highlanders with two runs in the bottom half of the first. Smith walked and scored from first when Jake Rodriguez doubled to straightaway center. Rodriguez moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Keyes singled up the middle.
Keyes led the Beavers with two hits.
UC Riverside starter Mitch Patito worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out three and walking four.
Oregon State heads to San Diego State Thursday to open a four-game series with the Aztecs at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch Thursday is slated for a 6 p.m. PT start. The game can be heard live on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
