The free agency period is underway and the Portland Trail Blazers wasted little time in reaching out to unrestricted free agent center Zaza Puchulia, a league source informed CSNNW.com.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the private nature of the talks, says there is interest on both sides and added that dialogue would continue.
Puchulia, 28, has spent the past eight seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. The 6-11 center is known as an enforcer in the paint throughout the league. He doesn't block many shots, but he's excellent in knowing where to be at defensively on the court.
Also, he is more than willing to give a hard foul.
The Trail Blazers were one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA last season. Adding Pachulia as a reserve or a starter would help rectify that issue immensely.
The 10-year veteran has a career average of 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
The Oregonian is reporting Blazers plan to meet with free agent center Chris Kaman sometime in the near future.
