Baumgartner's big day leads Ducks to doubleheader sweep

EUGENE, Ore – Tyler Baumgartner had six hits and three RBI, including the game winner in the ninth inning of game two, to lead No. 14 Oregon to a doubleheader sweep over Seattle University, 10-2 and 4-3, on Tuesday at PK Park. 

Baumgartner went 6-for-10 with a double and a triple to push the Ducks (10-3) to the win. He led eight Ducks who finished with multiple over the two games. Mitchell Tolman was 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Aaron Payne, Mark Karaviotis, Austin Grebeck, A.J. Balta, Kyle Garlick and Steven Packard each had two hits. Garlick added a pair of RBI. 

Game 1: #14 Oregon 10, Seattle 2

Baumgartner came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle while going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in the win. Aaron Payne and Austin Grebeck each went 2-for-4 with Payne scoring two runs and driving in one, while Grebeck had a run scored and a RBI.

The Ducks rallied from an early 1-0 deficit scoring the tying run in the bottom of the first on an infield hit by Baumgartner. 

Oregon scored two in the bottom of the third on a couple of Seattle miscues to take a 3-1 lead. Grebeck scored on a throwing error on a Baumgartner grounder, before the senior right fielder crossed the plate on a balk.

Baumgartner pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with a RBI double that scored Mark Karaviotis, who reached on an error by Ryan Somers on a ball hit hard and deep to left field.

Seattle pulled within two scoring a run in the top of the seventh, but Oregon put the game away in the bottom half of the inning scoring six runs.

Baumgartner tripled off the top of the right field wall to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Garlick. Tolman, who moved to second on the Garlick hit before a wild pitch advanced him to third, scored on when pinch hitter J.B. Bryant was hit by a pitch.

Packard, pinch hitting for Shaun Chase, picked up a RBI with a base hit to right field to score Garlick and give UO a 7-2 lead. Balta made it 8-2 when he scored on the second balk of the game by Seattle (5-8), before Payne scored pinch runner Nick Catalano with a base hit through the right side. Grebeck capped the rally with a RBI double scoring Payne to make it 10-2.

Senior Jeff Gold (3-0) picked up the win after allowing just one run on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk.  

Game 2: #14 Oregon 4, Seattle 3

Baumgartner delivered a two-out RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Ducks a sweep of the doubleheader.

Karaviotis, Oregon’s freshman shortstop, scored the go-ahead run after starting the rally with a bunt single to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Payne and then beat center fielder Chase Fields throw to the plate on the Baumgartner hit.

Baumgartner once again paced Oregon’s offense going 3-for-5 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. Tolman was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Karaviotis finished with two hits and a run scored in four at-bats. 

Oregon jumped out to a 3-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple by Tolman and a RBI base hit up the middle by Garlick. Seattle rallied with two runs in the second and one in the fifth to tie the score. 

Oregon didn’t manage another run until the game winner in the eighth. Senior Jake Reed (2-0) picked up the win getting the final four outs of the game. He struck out two of the four batters he faced.

Oregon opens a three-game series against Ohio State on Friday. The Ducks and Buckeyes play at 6 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and Noon on Sunday.
