EUGENE - Oregon junior cornerback Terrance Mitchell was ejected from today's game against Nicholls State University at Autzen Stadium in the first quarter for leading with his head while attempting to tackle Colonels quarterback Beaux Hebert as he slid to the ground following scrambling to his right for a gain of three yards.
Mitchell made only glancing contact with Hebert who slid under the cornerback as he launched himself. Nonetheless, Mitchell received a personal foul and was immediately disqualified for the remainder of the game.
The new rule penalizes a player for either leading with his head, as Mitchell did, or hitting a defenseless player above the shoulders.
Hebert's play gave Nicholls the ball at Oregon's 12. The drive ended with a field goal to make the score 24-3, Oregon with 14:16 remaining in the second quarter.
Mitchell was replaced in the lineup by junior Troy Hill. Because Mitchell was ejected in the first quarter he will be able to return next week at Virginia. Had he been ejected in the second half he would have been required to sit out the first half of the next game.
