Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau has promoted assistant coach Adrian Griffin to lead assistant, a league source conveyed to

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because an announcement on the promotion has yet to be made.

Griffin's advancement comes a little over two months since Chicago elected not to retain longtime lead assistant Ron Adams in late June. Adams has since joined the Boston Celtics' coaching staff.

Griffin, 39, is considered by league executives to be a rising head coaching star who was in the running to be the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers this offseason. In the summer of 2012, he was interviewed for the Portland Trail Blazers head coaching vacancy.

Griffin played nine years in the NBA and was widely known for his aggressive style on defense. He recently completed his third season under head coach Thibodeau. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as an assistant under Scott Skiles in Milwaukee.
